Waterfall
Water is soothing, calming, and serene, but sometimes it can be terrifying and destructive, not unlike life itself. The three rings of Waterfall symbolize the synchronicity between these feelings. I am trying to evoke that sense of peace, but at the same time hidden beneath the layers is another meaning. You have to look under the surface to see what lies beneath it. The color, texture, and fabric of Waterfall are intentional. Incorporated into it are lengths of recycled calico from old dresses, satin from a costume, an old curtain, and felt left over from a puppet. Woven into Waterfall are yarn, string, and lace. There is an irony to the use of materials. Fabric, yarn, and lace are often associated with warmth, comfort, and serenity, and rushing water is cool, frantic, and turbulent. Each ring or layer is intentionally darker than the next to illustrate the depth of our emotions. I’m pushing viewers to see beneath this facade.
